Schubert composed these three sonatinas almost simultaneously in 1816, intending them to be published together. It is thus possible to view them as a coherent whole, not so much in terms of similarity and affinity but more in evaluating what they offer in terms of diversity expressed in emotions, character and form. Here David Grimal and Valery Afanassiev cast a subtle light on the works, characterised by the accuracy and complete integrity with which they approach Schubert’s style. Their performance is notable for its conciseness, sheer beauty and haunting sensitivity.
