The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, a collection of 297 keyboard works composed between 1550 and 1620, mixes elaborate masterpieces with modest dance tunes and charming songs. It is one of the most important testimonies to musical practice in the Elizabethan period and at the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. Most of the great keyboard composers of the period are represented in the book. Excepting Sweelinck and Picchi, the majority of them are English.
