The Singularity of Gérard Pesson's music in the contemporary landscape is probably due to his very intense link with culture. And predominantly with literary culture, as it is strikingly visible in the texts around his compositions that turn more into a journal recounting a difficult work, involving poets and artists, than an explanation or instruction. It feels like a guided tour of a shop where references, fetishes and lost and founds are all packed together: a chord from Messiaen, an Ethiopian rhythm, a Sonata from Scarlatti that would already announce Beethoven, under a portrait of Bruckner...
This record of recent pieces by one of the major composer of his time, who's opera Pastorale will be played at the Théatre du Châtelet in Paris pretty soon, assembles the major interpreters of European contemporary music: the Orchestra of the WDR from Köln and the Ensemble Modern from Frankfürt.
