About the label

Records that are as beautiful to look at as to listen to;  that’s how the creation of Alpha was greeted by the press in 1999. While the general tendency is towards trivialisation and standardisation of recorded music, Alpha loves to shape each production into a unique object reflecting the century-old links between various forms of artistic expression. Love indeed also assumes understanding.

Understanding how music nestles within history, how it transmits and transforms itself from one country and from one creator to another. Fathom its relations with literature, poetry, theatre and painting through erudite but accessible texts written by specialised art historians. Alpha records are not only music, but an esthetical pleasure for the senses as well as for the mind.

We are proud to play a leading role in the definition of a new musical “geography”, and to explore, for the benefit of a growing audience, hitherto unknown artistic territories. In this respect, the 18th century is truly a whole new continent. From now on, Bellerofonte Castaldi, Domenico Belli, Stefano Landi, Pierre Guédron or Philipp Heinrich Erlebach are no longer simple names in musical encyclopedia : through the Alpha recordings, we now know that their works, long forgotten in the folds of history, deserve our interest and contain a wealth of unsuspected emotions.

Finally, and maybe most importantly, Alpha strive, from the very onset, to be one of the main explorers of new musical talent. Our choices, sometimes audacious, sometimes risky, abide by one single rule: the quest for musical excellence. It’s probably thanks to these stringent and permanent requirements that Alpha had the privilege to be elected, after only few years of existence, “Classical Label of the year 2005” by the international press.

Can musical pleasure lead to addiction ?  If so, which record label can pride itself with a review that starts with words: “My name is Simon and I’m an Alphaolic”….?
