These works by Mozart and Richter represent the meeting of those two periods. Richter - incidentally, Mozart heard and appreciated one of his Masses at Strasbourg Cathedral in 1778 - achieved an original synthesis in his String Quartets opus 5 : he made the quartet, hitherto influenced by the symphonic spirit of J. Stamitz, more democratic in style, with each instrument given solo parts and he skilfully contrasted the contrapuntal tradition with compositional processes borrowed from the world of opera. It is this very original combination that makes Richter's quartets so modern.
